AMARO FREITAS TRIO

Amaro Freitas Trio
Monday, June 2nd, 2025
Gazarte Main Stage

One of the most exciting figures in contemporary jazz on a global scale, Brazilian pianist and composer Amaro Freitas comes to Athens with his exceptional trio for a unique performance at Gazarte Main Stage on Monday, June 2nd, 2025. Renowned for his groundbreaking approach to sound and the deep spirituality of his music, Freitas blends his roots from Recife, Brazil, with an explosive, rhythmically rich, and deeply personal sonic identity.

Deeply influenced by Afro-Brazilian musical traditions and genres such as maracatu, frevo, and baiao, Freitas also draws inspiration from Coltrane, Parker, and Monk, crafting a distinctive style full of experimentation. His journey — which includes collaborations with legends like Milton Nascimento, Lenine, and Shabaka Hutchings — is itself a moving story of willpower and perseverance.

His rich discography includes the multi-award-winning albums “Sangue Negro,” “Rasif,” “Sankofa”, and most recently, “Y’Y” (2024). In it, Freitas redefines Brazilian jazz through a spiritual and deeply political lens. “Y’Y”, meaning “water” in the language of the indigenous Sateré Mawé people, is a tribute to the Amazon and the ancestral connection with nature. The album received rave reviews from outlets such as Pitchfork and The Guardian for its contemplative depth and rhythmic vitality.

Having already performed at prestigious venues like Ronnie Scott’s (London), Dizzy’s Club (New York), Casa da Música (Porto), and at numerous festivals worldwide — from the Montreux Jazz Festival to Buenos Aires Jazz — Amaro Freitas is known not only for his stunning virtuosity, but above all for the deep, transformative musical experience he offers live. Don’t miss the chance to experience up close one of the greatest pianists of our time, and a musician in perfect sync with the pulse of the emerging global jazz movement!

BOHREN & DEN CLUB OF GORE

Bohren & der Club of Gore
22 & 23 January2025
Gazarte Main Stage

More than five years after “Piano Nights” and over eleven years since “Dolores”, Bohren & der Club of Gore released their eighth album, “Patchouli Blue”, featuring an unusually high number of tracks (eleven) for the band.

The duration of these eleven pieces is just over an hour, perfectly capturing the Bohren vibe—an immersive sense of evocative slowness that sets in quickly and pulls you under.

The opening track of “Patchouli Blue” (2020), “Total falsch”, is the perfect beginning, contrary to what its title suggests. Classic Bohren: depending on the listener’s character, it may take two, maybe four notes, or even two minutes to realize they are in Bohren territory. The church organ floors you, while the subsequent saxophone elevates the carefully built tension across a landscape where even an encounter with Jan Garbarek would seem plausible. But surprises don’t stop there. A piece like “Deine Kusine” radiates unexpected lightness, while “Vergessen und vorbei” follows, with its rhythm machine and analog synthesizer evoking a soundtrack for a John Carpenter movie that was never made.

According to the band, “Patchouli Blue” consists of four parts “typical Bohren,” three parts “strange,” and four parts “jazz.” The sequence of song titles leaves room for listeners to create their own story, depending on their mood.

Unlike their past album titles, which rarely pointed to anything specific, “Patchouli Blue” evokes the heavy scents of Indian shops in the 1970s. These eleven soundscapes, stripped down with rigorous discipline, offer plenty of material for acoustic exploration.

After 14 years, Bohren & der Club of Gore finally return to Greece for a single live performance at Gazarte Main Stage on January 23, 2025.
