Amaro Freitas Trio

Gazarte Main Stage
One of the most exciting figures in contemporary jazz on a global scale, Brazilian pianist and composer Amaro Freitas comes to Athens with his exceptional trio for a unique performance at Gazarte Main Stage on Monday, June 2nd, 2025. Renowned for his groundbreaking approach to sound and the deep spirituality of his music, Freitas blends his roots from Recife, Brazil, with an explosive, rhythmically rich, and deeply personal sonic identity.
Deeply influenced by Afro-Brazilian musical traditions and genres such as maracatu, frevo, and baiao, Freitas also draws inspiration from Coltrane, Parker, and Monk, crafting a distinctive style full of experimentation. His journey — which includes collaborations with legends like Milton Nascimento, Lenine, and Shabaka Hutchings — is itself a moving story of willpower and perseverance.
His rich discography includes the multi-award-winning albums “Sangue Negro,” “Rasif,” “Sankofa”, and most recently, “Y’Y” (2024). In it, Freitas redefines Brazilian jazz through a spiritual and deeply political lens. “Y’Y”, meaning “water” in the language of the indigenous Sateré Mawé people, is a tribute to the Amazon and the ancestral connection with nature. The album received rave reviews from outlets such as Pitchfork and The Guardian for its contemplative depth and rhythmic vitality.
Having already performed at prestigious venues like Ronnie Scott’s (London), Dizzy’s Club (New York), Casa da Música (Porto), and at numerous festivals worldwide — from the Montreux Jazz Festival to Buenos Aires Jazz — Amaro Freitas is known not only for his stunning virtuosity, but above all for the deep, transformative musical experience he offers live. Don’t miss the chance to experience up close one of the greatest pianists of our time, and a musician in perfect sync with the pulse of the emerging global jazz movement!
